Autumn Fairy by merimask Autumn Fairy by merimask
By popular demand...here is proof that I know how to work in more than one medium.

I did this little watercolor of a fallen Autumn Fairy years ago. It was just a doodle that turned into a watercolor sketch...not even done on watercolor paper. I never intended it to be anything special (the real painting is a tiny thing on my wall...no more than 5 inches high) but somehow it remains one of my favorite pieces. I think my impressionistic slapdash autumn forest is the truest thing I've ever painted.

This is beautiful. Very reminiscent of Michael Hague. =)

I feel that anything about Autumn is inherently honest, the leaves show their true colors and then the trees shake them off to show their true shapes.

she must have been tossed around quite a bit in those winds. Poor ragged little faerie.

Sort of like Mourning Cloak butterflies...ever see those? They live for a whole season; all shiny and pretty in spring but by autumn they're tattered and dusty.

Most butterflies by the end of the season are pretty tattered and it is sad to see. I got some pictures of a one winged monarch last fall that really depressed me but it seemed to try and fly, regardless of it's haggard appearance. Poor leafy fae, *puts out some honey for it*

It really is! I'm amazed you managed that much detail into such a tiny picture, and that the scan of the image on here is so high quality.

Thank you! The original is so cute and little...I have it in a tiny ornate wooden frame with gilding & scrollwork. It suits her.

Wow very impressive for such a tiny painting! It always amazes me what people can get in such a small format.

I really love the ruffled and frayed nature of her wings. It really gives them the sense of being dusted and dried like the autumn leaves around her.

I had a whole story in my head about fairies when I did this. Can't remember it all...something about the wings changing to match the foliage in the maples. When the leaves fell, so did the fairies. They lost the ability to fly and lay covered by fallen leaves under the snow, all winter. In the spring they woke from hibernation with new fresh wings and went back into the maples for another summer...

That's a really cool concept. Any plans on doing the rest of the fairies 'blooming' in season?

I've thought about it but never got around to it...the masks have taken over all my creative time. :-)

Ah the unfortunate side effects of having many interests!

Though as an aside, it might be a fun sort of theme to conquer in masks! I can just imagine a series of masks composed of wings that represent each of the different seasons.

I'm having the opposite problem. So many paintings to do that my mask making isn't getting near enough love! :faint:

Thank you! I used no white in this, too. I masked her wings when I did the background.

I love watercolors but in truth they are MUCH harder to do than leatherwork. You only have one chance to leave your white space and get it right.

Miniaturism is in my blood...runs in the family. My great grandmother was a miniature portrait painter...made tiny oils of people's faces for lockets in Paris, around the turn of the century. I'm meant for small things. :-)

Thank you. ^_^ To be honest I'm a fair watercolorist but a much better leather artisan. Watercolorists are a dime a dozen, but leather artisans are much more rare. I can make a better living with my masks than I ever could with my 2-D art, I'm sure.
