Barn Owl Mask 2010 by merimask Barn Owl Mask 2010 by merimask
Oh, it's been far too long since I uploaded a mask, so here's something I finished last night. I haven't made this barn owl in a long time, but I received several orders for some (perhaps because there's a CG owl movie coming out soon...?).

So, here is my barn owl mask. Like everything I do, it is hand carved from one piece of 8oz leather, hand shaped, and painted with Liquitex acrylics.

This mask is available at my Etsy shop: [link]

This reminds me of the opening scene of The Labyrinth with the Goblin King in the form of the owl. I love that movie so much.

This is so adorable! I hadn't seen one for an owl before, but, it's just too cute for words! (and, for the record, yes! I think that movie looks adorable, too :3)

I really love that it's not ... well, frightening, for lack of a better word. Sometimes, when I see owls, especially done as masks, they become rather frightening visages, but not this one! I get too many ideas for a costume just looking at this... a pretty cape, with layers and layers of sheer like wings...

Yup it has to be the Owls of Ga'Hoole causing the owl trend! This is gorgeous, regardless. Amazing how simple it is, but with such lovely textural subtlety! You make me want to try my hand at snow owls :)

Hm, does this mean I can expect to see owls running around come Halloween? If any of them figure out a way to make their heads turn 180 degrees to look behind them, I'll give extra candy. ;)

Barn owls do have a very mysterious look to them, don't they. I can see why people might be creeped out by them, though you manage to keep their elegance as well. Although, human eyes staring out of that face probably would be kind of freaky.

I love this! Owls seems to be in lately. I keep seeing them in jewelry and such. Plus there's that Legend of the Guardians movie coming out soon (I think that's what it's called).
Really cool and different than your usual work!

Gwah! Merimask! I love you! Barn owls are my favourite owl in the whole wide word because they're awesome and pretty and mysterious-looking and silent and deadly and hissing like snakes and ah -

Erm. >.> [/barn-owl-fangirling]. I'mtotallynotmakingacomicwithbarnowlsinit.

But seriously - this is a really nice mask, because you got the facial structure right, and the beak and everything. Perhaps the brown on top of the head could have been a little more intense, but on the other hand, there's a dozen varieties of barn owl with at least as many colour-patterns. The black background works well for the photo, too; you get the real owl-eye thing going.

Seriously. Love this. :D

Thank you! I love barn owls too...they have such a unique face shape for a bird, almost human. I also love the creamy neutral tones I get to play with.

The birds I see here (northernmost edge of NY state) are fairly pale, probably has something to do with camouflage in the winter season. Our Red Tailed Hawks are light too. I like the pale tones...it makes the birds seem extra ethereal.

Anyway! I'm glad you like it. :-)

You're welcome. :D

And yeah... there's just something about that face that fascinates me. Most owls have pretty strange faces, what with the giant eyes and the shape of their facial feathers, but there's something almost otherworldly about the barn owl.

Glad to see you posting again. :)
