Here's a new design; a griffin mask. It's basically my eagle mask with tufted ears on either side, inspired by traditional heraldic griffins.

I can do it with a more realistic beak but the client wanted a "black and bronze" fantasy theme, so I used bright gold and bright bronze for the beak, with bronze accents in the feathers.

As ever, this is hand-carved, hand-shaped 8oz vegetable-tanned tooling leather, painted with Liquitex acrylics.

This custom mask can be requested only at my online shop: [link]

gorgeous, why is it that it doesn't look like you use a swivel blade. you are not using the hammer to make any beveling right? ... :( I can't do any of my project carving look as neat as yours. Maybe my blade is not wide enough raaaahh

I've had many years of practice and I've got ~very~ strong hands. I just bear down with my shoulder behind the carving. Always draw the blade toward you, always keep it as perpendicular as possible to the leather. I'm using Tandy's ceramic angle blade in a Al Stohlman Brand HCS1055 swivel knife holder...but I've used cheaper knives too. Ceramic is definitely best though.

Keep at it. My first two years, I did no masks at all...just learned how to carve really cleanly and deeply.

Mmm. Bird-masks.

The heavy use of black, contrasted with the bright bronze, makes for a very stark and serious-looking mask. I like it.
