Black Lion Leather Mask by merimask Black Lion Leather Mask by merimask
This is a new color variation on my popular "Verdigris Lion" design...The Black Lion.

Like all my masks, this is hand carved from 8oz leather, shaped without a mold or form, & painted with a combination of Liquitex acrylic paint and alcohol-based dye in black, with pewter paint drybrushed atop. The slightly silver cast of the accenting paint really sets off the carving.

By the way, I LOVE the way the black mask photographed against the backdrop of Fall leaves on the lawn. I wish that I could preserve those leaves somehow because I'd love to photograph all my black masks against them.

Available right now in my Etsy shop: [link]

Thank you for making such beautiful masks! This was in particular was an inspiration for a mask worn by Loew, one of my super heroes. [link]

No problem. This is by far one of my favorite masks that you made. It is so sleek and elegant, while being plenty mysterious.

You could press a bunch in a really heavy book if you wanted to... just put wax paper between the pages and leaves and poof! You're done!

Beautiful work by the way!

Take a picture of the leaves and print it out on a color printer to use as a backdrop?

Love the pewter. I think it makes the black really glow!

Thanks! :-)

I liked someone's idea of buying fake silk fall leaves & making my own background...I might try that.

Stunning!

I agree, the leaves do complement the mask rather nicely. You could always go to Hobby lobby and get some fake ones.. heh but where is the fun in that?

Actually that's not a bad idea! If I spend a little money & get the expensive silk leaves, I could make my own Fall backdrop. Hmm!

Oooh - the drybrushed accents really work well on this. Very subtle and well done. :)

Thanks! I think so too...black with pewter is really masculine in a subtle way too, so it works great on a male lion.
