Brown and Gold Kitsune Mask

I know I've put many of my leather kitsune masks in here, but this one is brand new.

I'm SO happy with it because I totally re-worked my old pattern. My other, older kitsune was based on actual kitsune masks, from Japan. Traditional kitsune masks are really very small. That works fine on me (I have a little face) and on most Japanese people, but not so much for Western faces.

So, this one is about 20% bigger than the old one, yet retains the proportions of my original design. I had to enlarge the face but keep the tiny catlike ears and smaller muzzle...it took a few tries but I did it!

I know it probably seems odd to be so happy about a design that basically looks no different from what I used to do, but it really bugged me that the small kitsune was too small to be worn by most of my customers. That feels like a failure to me. Pretty on the wall is good, but pretty to wear to the party is best of all.

For the base color, I used a transparent brown acrylic stain (called "antiquing" stain) on this mask, over bare leather. It gives it an almost wooden appearance and allows the grain of the leather to show.
