Cirque Du Soleil Mask by merimask Cirque Du Soleil Mask by merimask
So, this is one of the masks I made for Cirque Du Soleil. It was based off of the makeup for a character in "Saltimbanco"...very colorful and clown-like.

The story behind this piece is long and dramatic. Let's say it was a real learning experience. Initially I was going to produce the masks for Cirque's gift shops, myself, but the contract...! It was a difficult negotiation. In the end, they decided to purchase the rights for the design outright and manufacture it themselves, which was much better for me and everyone involved.

They market it as a child's mask. You can see their version of it here: [link]
You can purchase it online from their boutique: [link]

I can't produce this mask anymore, as it is now the property of Cirque Du Soleil. I still have this prototype though, & of course the right to use it for self promotion (which is, after all, basically what I'm doing right now!)

And now for the self-promotion...please visit my online Etsy shop! [link]

I love Cirque du Soleil, so I think it's awesome that you've done a mask for them! You did very well making it colorful but not garish. I think the gold base helped with that a lot. The white that they used makes it a bit too ostentatious, in my opinion. xD

It was a very cool opportunity & an invauable learning experience...I feel fortunate for the chance (but yeah, the whiteface = not so much!). ;-)

It's ironic, because when I was creating the design for them their art director asked me to "make it look 'more Cirque' ", at one point. LOL...

That was an awesome opportunity, but their design isn't nearly as eye-catching as yours.

That's a hell of a great feather to have in your cap... or at least a great line to have in your resume. Cirque is seriously impressive. I've seen one of their shows live in Vegas... holy crap it was cool!

It's bittersweet to see your design reproduced on a massive scale. On one hand it's way cool, & on the other it's never quite what you'd have done if you could have made each one yourself.

Your talent in maskmaking is something that people write stories about. You have a natural gift, and should I ever have money to expend openly (starving artists line the streets now, love) I will be more than sure (because I watch you) to ask you for a favor or so.

Absolutely incredible

Thank you. :-) I liked my version too. Once they bought it though, it was theirs to play with. This is an important object lesson for other artists in the difference between design production and artisan craftsmanship.

I agree with some of the other comments I like yours better of course since its handmade and theirs looks like cheap plastic. Although I'm quite certain that it probably isn't cheap :D

I do think its super cool that you do a lot of work for Cirque Du Soleil I really love their shows!!

No...you're right. It's cheap plastic. :-)

This was a lesson for me about the difference between artisan workmanship & mass manufactured production. Is there money in it? You bet! But it's not really something you're proud to put your name on.

I am a fan of Cirque, but that mask they made is horrendous! I think it is because you put so much effort into one mask, while theirs are quickly mass produced without thought to overall detail.

I was trying to avoid the "clown" look by avoiding whiteface, & they were all for it I guess. Once a design is out of your hands, you lose any creative control (but it was still a cool opportunity).
