I haven't made a Medusa in a few years, so when I got a commission for one, it was a bit daunting. Naturally, because I do everything the complicated way, I elected to make two at the same time and give her a choice of which she liked best. That way, if I screwed up in my rustiness, at least one of them was bound to be okay. Instead, they both turned out cool.
As ever, this mask is cut from one piece of 8oz leather, hand carved and sculpted with no mold or form. It's wet shaped and heat hardened, and painted with Liquitex acrylics. The snakes' eyes are 4mm malachite beads, sewn to black suede scraps by hand and cemented in place individually...it takes forever!
One of the Medusas will be listed in my Etsy shop tomorrow (8-02-2010) [link] Act fast if you want her because I don't make this design but once in a great while!
