Copper Gold Medusa Two...2010 by merimask Copper Gold Medusa Two...2010 by merimask
So, here is the second Medusa mask I finished this weekend. I like both equally. Since they are hand-shaped, there's a great deal of variation in each mask...even if I create them at the same time.

As ever, this mask is cut from one piece of 8oz leather, hand carved and sculpted with no mold or form. It's wet shaped and heat hardened, and painted with Liquitex acrylics. The snakes' eyes are 4mm malachite beads, sewn to black suede scraps by hand and cemented in place individually...it takes forever!

One of the Medusas will be listed in my Etsy shop tomorrow (8-02-2010) [link] Act fast if you want her because I don't make this design but once in a great while!

I am always amazed (which I shouldn't be with your masks) over the beautiful colours in your masks, but this one really makes me smile wide just out of the colours and the medusa mask itself always makes my neck hair stand up - in a good way!

This is a really great one! It was a wonderful touch using the malachite beads on the snake eyes! All the color really coordinate well together too :)

Thanks! :-) The stone beads are even better IRL...sort of matte finish with a pine blue-green tone. Really pretty beads.

Oh god, Meri, I love all your masks but this... this is my new favourite. I just stared and stared and showed it to everyone in the room and stared some more and wished I had $300 to spare. *_________________*

Undoubtedly, you have mastered this craft FAR beyond the point where all of your masks blow all expectation out of the water. Your capacity to come up with designs, but also executing them... just superb. You have seriously breached the line and have become the head of your class/craft.

Thanks so much. :-) This mask is a lot of work & frightening to make ('cause there are so many little things that have to be done just right) but when I get it right, it's very rewarding.

This angle gives a really good look at the profile of the snakey heads. I didn't realise they were quite as 3D as they are. :)

True! I prefer a 3/4 shot like this but some people get confused & complain that it makes the mask look lopsided.
