Dragon Mask Pair by merimask Dragon Mask Pair by merimask
A new pair of basic dragon masks finished yesterday & photographed between thunderstorms. "Starry Night" half masks, because people seem to love them and I love making them. They're fun because I just doodle the dragons right on the mask...it's fresh every time which keeps it interesting for me, even though I've made hundreds of these.

I finally got smart and bought a few big remnants of upholstery fabric, by the way. So now I have some nice neutral textured backgrounds I can always count on, regardless of weather or season. I have NO idea why I didn't do this sooner.

These guys, as ever, are hand carved hand shaped 8oz leather. Painted with Liquitex acrylics. Both available in my Etsy shop: [link]

I love the wings. It's nice you got some new backgrounds to work with, too. The fabric in this picture looks very good.

Im a BIG fan of the color green but you have me rethinking my favorite color. I love the detail and the cleanliness of you painting. the fact that you hand draw each dragon and dont use a template is SO amazing. With doing so many dragon masks like these I would have broke down and used a Template but you have not. That just shows you love and Stunning Artistic Capability with you work. :winner: Very Cool set. I might have to hit you up for my sis's Birthday I know she would LOVE a mask like these... :worship:

Did you use the same color on the blue dragon as the one of your other blue dragon mask? This one looks more aqua-ish.

Not that it's a bad thing. :) I like all of your dragon masks, you carve the scales beautifully!

These are absolutely gorgeous. I love the detail on the scales, and that metallic blue is just.. Amazazing, to say the least. The ribbons match very nicely to their dragon, and the stars are a nice touch. I'm sure they would look fabulous on two people standing right next to eachother. :la:

Beautiful work, as always. :)

I love how there's always some 3-D feature on your masks.
Are the parts that are off to the side very sturdy?

great idea using fabric to photograph your work I've been using a black towel to photograph my sculptures which sometimes isn't big enough XD

and that's cool I thought you just used transfer paper, more work goes into your masks than I thought D: your amassing!

Fabric remnants are at least a yard wide so, it's a great solution to a background problem.

I picked some voile and crushed velvet as well as velour brocades. Textured but not so busy that they distract from the mask.

I usually use transfer film for my popular designs that I repeat often, but these guys are their own thing each time. :-)

These are so cute! And beautifully done. I love the colours and the sheer creativity with these. They're wonderful!
If I had the money, I would certainly consider purchasing one. I love the blue dragon as it looks like it's metalic and fits really, really well with the background.
You really have something special going on here.

These have to be some of my favorite masks of yours. I love the wings that stick out on the sides. And acrylic paint!? The colors are so crisp and sharp i would have thought they were dyed that way. Fabulous job, once again. :meow:

Thanks! I leave the dragons undyed when I make the rest of the mask black, so the paint goes on to raw, bright leather. Keeps the colors crisp.

The blue one is really neat. :D Which isn't to say that the green one isn't neat, but the blue one works really well with the starry night background - since the brightness of the stars is repeated in the silver scales on its stomach, the colour-scheme holds together in a very nice way.

Good work, once again! :D

Upholstery fabric IS nice for backgrounds since it is heavy and will lie flat or take gentle folds and hold its position properly.

BTW, another trick, if you're only photographing one half mask or the like, is to use scrapbooking paper as the background.

I like the scrapbook paper idea...some of the patterns that look like granite or parchment would really be perfect, especialy for my Egyptian masks.

Foreign newsprint, if you can get it, is good as a background, too, especially if it's an Asian mask on a Japanese (or etc) newspaper.

I'd like to use newsprint myself...Russian, Japanese, French...anything not English so that the words aren't distracting to the majority of my 'audience'...but there is no such thing available around here.

You know, you could always ask an international friend. But you know what? It might be dangerous...what if some joker sent you a nice-looking sheet of print that was actually a story about a sex scandal or a horrible bloody murder? It'd be distracting for SOMEone to see that behind the pretty art (if they can read it).

Sort of like Americans who get kanji tattoos and then have Japanese people laugh at them 'cause they have "pig" on their shoulder forever. ;-)

You'd have to really trust your source for the newsprint, I'm sayin'. I have friends in Japan who could do this for me but some of them are jokers. ;-)

Also, heavy medieval script or other very decorative script would be okay in a sheet of print, even in English, because it's hard to read en masse and people tend to just see it as a sheet of text rather than individual words.

I could go with French. I can read French myself, so it'd be safe. :)
