Dragon Skull Leather Mask 1 by merimask Dragon Skull Leather Mask 1 by merimask
Something new and scary; a dragon skull mask!

I've been working on this one for a while. The design is roughly based on an antelope skull. I added bone spurs to the sides of the face and extra horns. And fangs. And inlaid a green cat's eye stone in the forehead, just to make it look properly magical (although unfortunately...dead).

Like all my masks, this is hand carved and hand shaped without molds or forms, from one piece of 8oz leather. It's been painted with colorfast Liquitex acrylics. Signed dated AND numbered original; this is "Dragon Skull #1".

Available right now in my Etsy shop: [link]

Yes, it's really great! This thing wants to buy ^ ^ Can I ask what material you make these masks? I just also want to make this one for a costume ... But if you do not want me to reveal your secrets, then I'll understand)

You know, people have been hating on this one's green stone, but looking at this and the other one, I rather like how the green pops in this one. It's as if it's alive on the inside with some kind of inner fire or magic that keeps the dragon animated. I can see this being really cool with some kind of opal or labradorite (or other stone with luminescence). I love em both, but this one makes my imagination run away even more because of that pearlescence.

Great design! Very different, but I like it a lot.
Great job with the coloring. It looks old and dirty and perfectly like bone! I love the horns and the stone.

Thanks! Yeah, I wanted it to look like something you really might find on the ground somewhere. The best fantasy art has a touch of reality to it, IMO.

I like this one better than the other, something about the green makes it more eerie. I'd love to see one with a red stone in the center...

I just got finished drawing something very similar, which amuses me greatly.

I like this. :D The texture on the bone is fantastic, and I like the double set of twisty horns.

Is it hard to inlay things in leather like this? It looks like it might be kind of tricky.

Thank you. :-)

I figured out a pretty cool method for inlay years ago. It's tried & true...never lost a stone setting. Here's how I do it:
*trace the outline of the stone onto the mask (has to be a flat-backed cabochon or it doesn't work, by the way)
*draw a line inside the outline, about 1/8 inch smaller.
*cut out smaller hole.
*smooth edges with skiver
*put stone in from the back. It won't fal through 'cause the hole is smaller than the circumference of the stone.
*lay thick suede (or 2oz split) over back of cabochon on inside of mask...be sure it is at least 1/2 inch bigger than circumference of cab.
*use barge cement (dry mount) to sandwich the stone in place; suede patch, cab, hole.

You end up with a peekaboo stone setting that'll never fall off. ^_^

OMG! It turned out so amazing! It looks like a real skull to me :D I love the texture in the paint like it is real bone. The connection from the horns to the skull itself is really fluently. Gosh, I love this one so much! I actually think this is the best mask you made so far. It's a diffrent style like you do normally, but that's what it makes it so nice. It's another part of your fantasy world :D I asked for it a lot, and now it's finaly done. Great job :dalove:

True! Only sun-bleached old bones get white. :-) I looked at a lot of photos & did the base of this one very brown.

That is so cool, and a really great addition to your other pieces. I like how different it is from your other works. Love the jewel too. 8D Are you planning on making more of these and selling them? As well, do you have plans/ideas of making other animal skull masks? A sort of bird one could be very cool. C:
