This was a special version of my "beaded cat" series. Since I used real butterfly wings along with the beads I decided to call it a "fairy cat". I know. It's not really a fairy cat, but it sounded better than butterfly cat or whatever.
I found the wings on Etsy. Actually they came as a sheet of laminated assorted wings, and I cut them out, punched holes, created twisted wire bails for each one...it was fun!
Before anyone gets upset with me (because I've been around this block a few times and I know how it goes) the supplier assures me that the wings are "collected" and not "harvested". It seems your butterfly conservatories and zoos etc run a lucrative business of selling the wings of their expired exhibit butterflies, who died naturally of old age. Which I think is pretty cool, actually.
The mask, however, is (as ever) made of leather, which did in fact require a cow death. So there's that bit of guilt I have to bear (actually in the USA all hides are a byproduct of our crazy-huge meat industry so, I'm not taking the fall for this one either. *points at McDonalds*).
This was a special piece created for an art auction and it of course was a big hit, and sold right away. I'm thinking of making more in this vein, though. I have a LOT of those wings.
