Here is a third "flaming Kitsune" mask, commissioned by the same fire juggling troup that commissioned the first two (elsewhere in my "Japan inspired" gallery). I have to say, I like this one best of all.
The others were on a black and white base, respectively. This time they wanted a "red fox" base, so I decided to add the carved fur details just to make it properly "foxy". The combination of traditional Japanese flames, traditional Japanese kitsune mask shape, and realistic fur is really interesting, IMO.
This mask, (like all my work) is made completely from one piece of 8oz vegetable-tanned tooling leather, hand carved and hand shaped without molds or forms. Painted with Liquitex acrylics. Custom masks like this one can be requested only at my online Etsy shop: [link]
This one is definitely my favorite, too. Somehow it just seems a little bit more fantastical with a touch of realism, like maybe this creature actually exists somewhere or something, you know?
