Gold Leather Kitsune Mask by merimask Gold Leather Kitsune Mask by merimask
This is funny.

So, I was carving another black kitsune mask the other night, re-stocking my poor, busy Etsy shop. I try to carve exactly the same pattern every time, so I won't have to take fresh pictures when I re-list a popular mask. It's just a whole lot easier that way.

But I screwed up! I combined the design of the black kit with the scrols of the white kit. Wrongo! Well damn.

What to do? I mean...it's a lovely mask anyway.

So I decided to make a super-special one of a kind gold kitsune, with burnished gold and bright gold and copper. Wouldn't you know it, I like it better than the black one!

Anyway it'll be in my shop [link] until it's not anymore. I have a feeling it'll go quick. ;-)

Hand carved/shaped 8oz leather and all sorts of pretty metallic Liquitex acrylic paints. Shiny...

I like how all the colors match up. It's very nice! I thought there was a giraffe mask in the gallery, but I can't seem to find it. Has it been moved?

It's very pretty, when I first saw it it reminded me of like a goddess, if that makes sense ^^, like I can imagine it being worn by a spiritual being ^^

Thank you...the pale gold does make it look ethereal, I think. :-)

Very ethereal and magical looking. Just what one might expect the Kitsune to wear in kabuki or noh, perhaps?

Oh, a mask like this would look so awesome worn by someone in a gold yukata with tiny flowers on it, I think. :-)

Traditionally these kitsune are most closely related to the ones used in Kyogen theater...sort of an "everyman" kind of theater, while Noh and Kabuki are more stylized & refined. A kitsune costume in kyogen is usually very "commoner", with earthy colors. Kitsune is a trickster and a commoner in Kyogen.

Ah, I've not been aware of the Kyogen form of theatre. We touched a bit on Kabuki and Noh when I was majoring in theatre in university--but the focus was more on European and American theatre in that 'history of theatre' course. :) Now I have something to go look up and read about!

Thanks!

Flat gold is boring I agree, but adding texture made it more interesting.

the results are quite surprising! I normally avoid using gold for that reason but after seeing this I think I'll be a little more daring now ;3

Thank you. :-) I agree...some of my favorite designs happened because I messed up or was goofing around. You never know when something weird will work well.

It's so pretty! :D The slight difference in shade between the gold and the copper works really well.

Thank you!

Yes, I thought it needed some different coloring but nothing too drastic.
