Golden Wolf 2 by merimask Golden Wolf 2 by merimask
The second of my "Golden Wolf" mask experiments...

I decided to do a more stylized "Asian" flame motif on this one. I think I went...a little overboard on the flames! Not really sure if this is a viable pattern to offer repeatedly in my shop because it took SO long to carve.

Still, I like the results.

This mask is available (probably for a limited time...my last golden wolf lasted about three hours) at my online Etsy shop: [link]

Love the gold flames and the black accents around his eyes.

Thanks! The black is a bit stark...I might try a medium brown next time just for fun...

the designs here really added to the contrast between the fur and designs. It looks like alot of work though. ive got a mask in mind that im going to try out. just trying to find some leather. where do you get yours from?

Thanks!

I only use leather from the Wickett & Craig tannery in Curwensville PA...their stuff is the best leather by far of any I've tried.

You can reach them at 1-800-TANNERY. They'll ship right to your door. Try some bellies first if you don't feel like committing to a whole hide right away. 7 ounce is a good weight to start.

Beautiful! I love how the gold came out; and actually I think the flames are a good amount as it makes them look like they are part of the wolf's fur pattern.

Thank you!

True...at the time I was like "holy cow I overdid it!" because I thought it looked too busy, but actually it worked.

I think the first time we step back and look our eyes go to every little thing...then you go have a muffin, come back, and see it in a whole new light.
It did indeed! Good job!

I like stylized flame a bit more interesting... why is it so wrinkled, though?

Yes I thought the Asian flames were interesting too.

Actually the leather almost always wrinkles a bit when it's shaped (check out my other golden wolf), it's just very noticeable this time because I used a brown antique stain & then drybrushed gold over it, which accentuates all the texture & flaws in the leather.

I like the wrinkling 'cause only leather looks that way; it's a characteristic of the natural tendencies in the medium, which is why I like this medium.

yes, it is rather attractive... though when I first saw it I thought the oven was too hot or something... perhaps it's just the angle and lighting that brings it out more...

Thanks! Actually those parts are jet black; they just reflected the sky. But deep blue on gold would actually be very pretty & perhaps I'll experiment again... ;-)
