Great Forest Dragon by merimask Great Forest Dragon by merimask
I just finished this fellow this morning. I think it's the winner of the "Coolest Thing I Made This Season" award. :-)

A client in France requested this brown and green dragon. I added bronze details to the horns and tips of the mane. I hope he likes this guy...the brown antiquing stain was a mess to apply, but it has a wonderful transparent quality on the mane and really shows off the carving, so it's worth the mess.

This mask is cut, carved, hand-sculpted 8 ounce vegetable tanned tooling leather. I painted it with a combination of Liquitex acrylics and acrylic antiquing stain.

Custom masks like this one can be requested only at my online shop: [link]

It's a beautiful colour combination that somehow reminds me of fish. I don't know why, I think it's the colours though.

Also, the brown antiquing thing looks awesome.

Gorgeous colours on this one. :) It really looks like a piece of greenery given a face. The brown stain on the mane really works, so it was certainly worth the mess, and the shade of green you picked makes the scales look almost like aged bronze.

Definitely worth the title of "Coolest Thing" this season. :D

Fantastically done! The bronze tones and the stain make the colours just wonderfully deep. The horns also seem to have a tighter curl, but I might just be imagining it. :P

I'd have to say, I think it's a toss-up between this and the Gold Sun Lion mask for the "Coolest Thing I Made This Season" award!

The woodgrain look of the scales and the color combination lends a very authentic 'camouflage' feel, not unlike what real animals possess and employ. You'd be walking through a forest and never see the dragon right next to you...

It bears repeating... you do such beautiful work.

I don't see how anyone could *not* be happy with one of your masks! I adore the colors.. I really love the antiquing color tone! Was worth the mess if you ask me ;)
I made a belt the other day used the 'Coal Black' Tandy dye (Absolute liquid texture) talk about a mess :faint: turned everything black/dark blue, 'n got on everything in sight it seemed! (Thankfully all cleanable surfaces)... I spent 2x as much time cleaning and re-cleaning up my mess than I did dying the belt :giggle:

I hope to one day soon be able to stop bein broke so I could commission a mask from you! I want to try my hand at making one someday, one day.. but I don't think I'd ever get the creativeness to make one with such flare like all yours have :) Especially your dragons!

Thank you. :-)

Next time you need to make something black, try Fiebing's alcohol-based USMC black (you can get it at Tandy too), and when it dries, do a wash of Tandy's black antiquing gel stain. The black dye penetrates well but can fade, so the antiquing stain atop that locks in the color and makes it fade-resistant and a rich streak-free black. You still have to seal it, too (I use Tandy's Super Sheen).

Hmm.. I have Fiebings USMC black, but didn't like the shiny tone (Reminds me of ballpoint pen ink) .. but never thought to apply the antiquing over it (I also have that)... on my most worn belt I did the mistake of using Tandys all-in-one dye.. which just sits on the leather and wears quickly 'n is greatly affected by light scratches.. that poor belt gets touch ups like crazy between the black bein a pain and the Tandy paint crackin and chipping off the design on it... How does the Liquitex paint do with wear? (Like wear a belt would take?) If I get ambitious I may remake the belt sometime.. I'm just not looking forward to tooling the tribal flames and Mustang emblem again :XD: ([link] - Not so wonderful photo of it, lol) 'course if I redo it, I can fix the E in Untamed, lol.. it's a lil high and since doing it, has bothered me, though it's hardly noticeable, haha
All my stuff gets sealed with Super Sheen.. 'n a coat of a conditioning wax a friend of mine makes for leather..

The Tandy black dye I used leaves a gorgeous streak free rich black, 'n it seems to soak into the leather well... it was just messy when I did it :XD: I'm thinkin next time a small dish with a wool dauber to apply instead of out of the bottle on to a rag, lol.. 'n more plastic down! (Not wax paper like I usually use.. it soaked through, which was a first with anything I've dyed) .. I'm still learning :D It's fun! 'n thank you so much for the helpful advise!

Thank you! :-) It's funny; that's exactly the same pattern I use for both the Pewter Dragon and the Frost Dragon, but that rich brown antiquing stain gives the carving a totally different look.

This is a gorgeous piece!

Taking another look after seeing that comment about the central mane... it looks very good as it is, but on a future mask it might be fun to try cutting out the top half of each "lock" of hair and forming them to pop up a bit to increase the layered look effect. It would also double as "air venting" for the wearer.

Keep re-imagining your stuff, it's great!

The colours in this are so freaking amazing!!! This is spectacular. And the brown stain may have been a mess to apply, but boy howdy it paid off in so many ways. This is just... so GOOD.
