Green Flame Dragon Mask by merimask Green Flame Dragon Mask by merimask
I haven't done a full-faced dragon mask in a long time, and I had an order for one anyway, so I made a few new ones.

This is my Asian flame motif dragon, done in a new color version; verdigris on black. It's subtle but I think I like it. :-)

As ever, hand carved, hand tooled 8oz leather, wet formed with no molds, heat set & painted with Liquitex acrylics.

This is #3 of the green dragon series and available right now at my online etsy shop: [link]

Pretty! I love the flame motif, but it looks more blue and teal to me than green, :)

This has always been one of my favorite of your dragon mask designs, but it looks even better in these colors.

OMG! It's so pretty!

Say... I try to find the leather and it was like a mitick quest, and I work a piece as you say in your youtube tutorial (great tutorial btw!) It turn out quite nice, but the smell is soooo strong!!! I can't put the mask in my face...

Is there a way to make the smell of leather go away?

If you got the leather from 1-800-TANNERY, it shouldn't smell. They only sell veg-tanned. Chrome tanned has an awful stink & is cheap stuff...did you get it from Tandy?

Jajaja... sorry, i miss to say that I'm from Costa Rica...

But I think that it was chrome tanned... I'm gonna make another mitic quest for the veg-tanned type!

Buying on-line in not an option... Is really expensive in here, taxes suck!

Thanx. n_n

The verdigris is really beautiful against the black, sort of pulls out the blue in it.

You know you're an artist when you can actually identify and name a colour like "verdigris" rather than saying "it's a green kind of thing". Colours work well together, though. Have you considered using the verdigris with a copper or bronze colour? Kind of a tarnished dragon (or whatever ;P ).

As per usual, your scales are amazing. My favourite part of the piece however, are the ears, and the little swirls for them. I also really like the flame swirls on the spiky bits along the cheek - reminds me a bit of the metal decorative frames on doors and such.

It's really nice! It is subtle indead, but that's nice. The 2 little horns in the middle of its head are pretty cute, I have to say. The big horns are shaped really nice too. The flames are shaped really fluently. I like the colours, the verdigris just fits the black.

All together, this is another great idea right out of your head :D

Thanks! It's a sort of "verdigris" thing, so it's very green but also a bit aqua & bronze.

At first I thought this mask was asymmetrical in shape, but then I realized it's just the angle. Do you make Asymmetrical masks, shape-wise?

Only really intentionally...like the ones with leaves or dragons off to one side. Mostly I keep it as symmetrical as I can. The Ouroboros design is a bit asymmetrical though...

I can understand that. You wouldn't want to overload one side of the mask or it would probably fall off or get tangled or something.

Do you draw all the details on there with a pencil before you carve it? I mean, that's just amazing if you can remember everything while you're carving.

I like the colors on this one~ :3 The green looks a bit blue, though, but I think that just makes it blend in better with the rest of the mask.

And for some reason, I think the curtain / blanket you put it on matches the design. xD

I draw the design onto a plastic transfer film, so I'll always have it. Also, that way I can flip it so both sides match.

The upholstery fabric I bought for backgrounds does indeed look good with this flame motif...I agree! :-)

Ahhhh. That makes sense. xD That way it's equal size on both sides too. c: If I ever try to draw the same thing, one turns out huge and the other is small. :I

It does! It makes the picture flow. :3
