Haku Mask by merimask Haku Mask by merimask
This is another new design, based on the character "Haku" from the movie "Spirited Away". Haku is a Japanese river dragon.

It is constructed entirely out of one piece of 8oz leather; hand-tooled & shaped with no molds or forms, then dyed & painted with Liquitex acrylics & sealed with a clear coat acrylic for protection & durability. It is colorfast & safe to wear anywhere in any weather.

This mask (and many others) is available at my online shop: [link]

The character "Haku" belongs to Studio Ghibli. The interpretation is my own.

Well thank you very much! ^_^ I love all of Miyazaki's movies but "Spirited Away" is definitely my favorite. "My Neighbor Totoro" is a close second...simply adorable.

You are welcome. Easily "Spirited Away," it just holds this magical appeal that I honestly cannot explain. The film is just one of those rare types that I could watch over and over not get bored of.

I just got reminded of that beautiful scene where Chihiro tells Kohaku his name and he breaks into thousands of pieces and they fly off together back to the bath house...
I need to rewatch all my Ghibli films now...

beautiful mask as always :D

Oh, that's such a beautiful scene! In fact I used a screenshot from that same scene when I sketched out the design for the mask.

I always cry during Chihiro's nighttime train ride. It's so beautiful and lonely...for some reason the image of that lone train speeding across the water always breaks my heart a little.

Have you seen Tales of Earthsea? One of the newer Ghibli movies, directed by Miyazaki's son I think...

glad I didn't spoil it for you then!
It's especially fun if you've read the books by Ursula K Le Guin, just to make design comparisons ;)

Thank you! ^_^

I use those whiskers a lot. They make the dragons look especially Asian. In the description of a Japanese dragon, they are said to have the horns of a stag, the scales of a fish, and the whiskers of a catfish.

Ah, yeah, I know. I study the mythological creatures of many cultures.

I haven't taken the time to look at ALL of your masks just yet, so it was the first time for me seeing such a clever way to represent the whiskers. If I were making a mask (most likely out of plaster or something, lol. Or maybe polymer clay. This is why I stick with jewelry/small sculpture), I'd probably make the hair and whiskers dangling beads of sorts. Hahah. I love things that dangle and jingle... and I love things that are soft and colorful... I'm so easily won over. Like a kitten. Hahah, so ignorant...

But anyway. Dragons are a fascinating subject, for sure. So... prominent! My favorite is Quetzalcoatl (because he's fluffy and butterfly-obsessed)

...Aaaaaaaahahah, I'm such a simpletooooon...

I like your dragons, but foxes will always have a superior place in my heart. They're so mystical and gentle compared to the fiery, passionate, powerful dragons~

Heehee... the meticulous detailing is a beautiful fortee in your handiwork. I love the set turquoise stones in the diamondback medusa. So beautiful.

SEE THIS IS WHY I'M STALKING/WATCHING YOU NOW. =DDD
