His Rubbery Grasp by merimask His Rubbery Grasp by merimask
No one has ever made a mask like this, to my knowledge. It's something completely new and unique. An unholy marriage of tentacles and Steampunk, this is "His Rubbery Grasp".

The mask is hand carved from 8oz leather, shaped with no mold or form by hand, and painted with colorfast acrylics in rich antiqued brown, black, and gold. The twisting tentacles have some extra special details; realistic hand made sucker rings of my own design, made from real rubber!

The cog-monocle is half of a pair of retro-look driving goggles (the right eye). Made of lightweight PVC with an amber acrylic lens, it is augmented with a hand carved leather side-shield and real brass cogs . It is custom-fitted to the mask (the hole behind it matches the shape of the opening) and secured with brass studs and fasteners.

This mask took FOREVER to make. Not sure how many of these I'll ever make, but at least this one is done and I'm happy and relieved to have finished it. I ~finally~ depicted the tentacles in a way I'm happy with. :) As an added bonus, the rings have a wonderful, rubbery tactile effect when you run your fingers along the tentacles. CREEPY!

:please: Just a note: I've noticed a rude trend here on DA lately. If you can't afford to collect original artwork, I'm sorry for that, but it's not my problem. Do not complain about the price...I know it's expensive but that's because no one in the world but me can make this mask. It's not for a casual collector. If you are interested, here's the link: [link] ...but it's not a toy. It's not for everyone, and I'm not WalMart.

this is so unbelievably cool!! I would love to see a photo of someone wearing it, though, I just can't imagine the full effect. :D
Awesome work, and I think the prices in your shop are reasonable. Your masks have a high aesthetic value and seem to be durable, so wth.

I would buy this in a flash if I had the money - and that's not to say it's too expensive, because it's worth every penny you're charging and more, I'm just terribly broke right now :P Maybe it'll still be around when I've saved up some cash.
The twists and turns of those tentacles must have been so much work! The mind boggles. I love the sucker detail too; His Noodly Appendage had a nice sucker effect, but the little extra pieces here really give it something special. I can imagine the rubbery feeling would be... unsettling, haha.
Amazing stuff :D

O_O Amazing! Simply amazing! You really outdid yourself this time, and I don't even LIKE tentacle ANYTHING (or steampunk). Those 3D suckers really add a lot, and I love love LOVE the detail of the tentacle right there at the center. Marvelous! And that color brown is just so...rich and luscious

Haters gonna hate. Keep being awesome and ignore them, they aren't work your time. :meow: Everything is so cookie-cutter and mass-made these days most people have forgotten what it's like to have one of a kind, quality anything.

PS: Do you have any shots of what the leather piece on the monocle looks like? It's hard to see the detail in this one...

My goodness, I simply adore your octopus steampunk masks! There's a series of steampunk romance/horror/comedy books I read (I believe they're referred to as the "Parasol Protectorate" series of books -- the first book is called "Soulless") that feature an octopus as a recurring theme, and I just can't help but think the author would fall in love with this mask too! If I had a Twitter I would so tweet her a link to your masks. (I tend to stay away from social networking stuff. Blah.)

first, and i merely make a statement here, the cost is a bit out of my price range.

that being said, it is completely awesome. if i did have the money, i would gladly purchase the mask, although it's beauty would be wasted as i would only display it for a little while, then hide it in with my "horde" of what i view as treasures.

now for some simple facts.

unfortunately, spartan is correct, copywrites are country specific, and the smallest tweek makes the replica an original as far a copywrite are concerned. and it could be something really minor and unnoticed, such as half a centimeter smaller radius in the sucker ring. it's sad but true.

Check out The Berne Convention. I do have an attorney, we have actually fought international plagiarism cases and won. Easily.

The regulations of the Berne Convention are incorporated into the World Trade Organization's TRIPS agreement (1995), thus giving the Berne Convention effectively near-global application. The 2002 WIPO Copyright Treaty enacted greater restrictions on the use of technology to copy works in the nations that ratified it.

That's nearly every sovereign nation in the world, barring some Asian countries that remain outside the jurisdiction of the WTO.

I'm not sure who is giving you your legal facts. Please be careful copying work outside of your country (unless it is anime fan art...because Japan could give a crap).

If anyone's complaining about your prices it's just a lack of education. The problem arises when you hit the DA front page (which you've been doing a fair bit lately) and people who don't like your art get it thrust in their faces, they can't resist coming in and making a snide remark. Really cool detail on the suckers, I can't believe they're handmade.

I've just stalked most of your gallery and sat there dumbfounded at how freaking gorgeous all of it is!
I saw that comments were disabled on some of your pieces and my first thought was "Oh, she must get flooded with all the notifications of people telling her how amazing her work is."
It's sad that people are bitching about prices. I like my reasoning for you disabling comments better I think lol :p
That being said, I'm adding to those notifications and just going to gush a little bit about how gosh darn amazing you are. I mean...WOW. You probably hear that a lot lol.

That is one bad-ass mask, let me tell you. It looks downright sinister! And the suckers make it even better! Not really something I'd wear myself, but it'd be perfect for steam-pirate costumes. Really outdid yourself on this one!

And seriously, of course it's going to be expensive; how many hours did it take to put all those rubber rings on there? O_o

Do you think Salvador Dali lowered his prices just because people complained his artwork cost too much? Heck no!
This is a piece of artwork much like any other inspiring creation, and thus shouldn't be treated as a simple costume mask. I understand how you feel, and although it may be unique and yes, you may be the only one who has created one so far, I am certain others will mimic, and their talent may be equal.
Do not take these words an insult, that is not my intent.

I greatly enjoy this mask, more so due to my infatuation with Davy Jones. You have incredible talent, and I look forward to more creations from you!

Actually, I am the only one in the world who can make this mask. Because its my design, and it's protected by copyright. I'm the one who spent several days designing it and I'm the one who figured out how to get the effect I wanted. You show me one other leather/metal/rubber/acrylic mixed media mask by any other artist...I'll seriously be surprised.

I reserve the right to be proud of the fact that my work is unique. My ideas and designs keep getting stolen all the time, and I see it here, especially here on DA and in Etsy (I'm not stupid or blind), but I'm just going to keep coming up with different ways of doing things, because that's what I'm good at.
That's not arrogance, that's a fact.

People copy my designs and they undersell me, and that's a fact too. Since I have to deal with that crap, daily...I think I get to at least take some satisfaction in being the first one to come up with these designs. If it's so easy, why am I the first?
