Inari Leather Mask by merimask Inari Leather Mask by merimask
This is a new design I quite like...the Japanese sumi-e elements on the cheeks and inside the ears make this look like a fantasy kitsune, or perhaps Inari (a goddess that often appears as a beautiful white fox). I suspect I'll be doing a lot more of these.

This mask is (like everything I do) made from one piece of hand carved, hand sculpted leather. Painted with colorfast Liquitex acrylics & sealed with an acrylic clear coat for durability.

This is a signed, dated, numbered original. "Inari #1" Available right now (but not for long, I bet!) in my Etsy shop: [link]

Beautiful!

I have a question: Do you do the tooling before or after you shape it?

Amazing detail. Most of took a little while making those fur markings, even though it's very simple it's very brilliant how you made it pop by using the black and white solid parts to make the eyes center more to the face. Love how it turned out!

That's a very charming style. Delicate without being 'soft' or fragile in appearance.

Thanks so much! :-) It's really my Japanese fox pattern, differently-colored but eh...just changing the color changes the whole tone of the mask I think.

Beautiful, as always.

What type of leather do you use, just curious.... cow, deer, moose, elk, other?

Thank you. :-)

I use 8oz cowhide...tooling leather is almost always cow, sometimes calf. I only use vegetable-tanned cow though. By-product of the meat industry, so no cow ever died for my art. :-) You can get it at 1-800-TANNERY.

8oz is heavy! I wondered if you would need a very heavy leather for what you do! I love seeing all your new masks on here, you truly have a gift for what you do with them!

I am a fur sewer, critters die for my way of life and my living, so you're not offending me even if the cows did die for you :D ;) Tho, I guess I offend a lot of people...

The angle of the shot and the big black areas make it look as if the eye-holes extend all the way down the line of the snout - which is a pretty neat effect. I bet they'd be cool to wear in the dark, where only the lighter parts are visible.

I like the delicate look of this mask; the details are simple but well placed, and the colour is really subtle. :)

True...the black around the ears is sort of hidden too. :-) I would have much rather photographed it on pretty maple leaves, but mine are all gone already.
