This mask started as a special commission from my Etsy shop and then (as they sometimes do) seemed like such a Good Idea that I made more.

I'm calling it an Iron Jaguar, because the fur is highlighted by drybrushing silver & pewter paint over an entirely black mask. Then, I re-paint the spots in pure black again, for contrast.

A note of interest; I learned a long time ago that texture and carving is a great way to achieve cool effects when painting. I never use an airbrush, but I got very good at the drybrush technique (just a little paint on the brush, worked well into the brush & swiped gently across the top surface only). When used over handcarved leather, drybrushing really brings out the texture. That's how I get such realistic depictions of fur. All the hard work goes into meticulous carving of every hair...the detail shows when you drybrush a lighter color over a dark base. One of my little secrets. ;-)

This mask is available right now at my Etsy shop: [link]

:heart:very beautiful....most of the catmasks I have seen don't really bring out the fur very effectively...I've never drybrushed on leather,it looks remarkable,I would never have guessed the material from the photograph, you have amazing skills!!:)

Thanks! I like tiny details...the only way (in my opinion) to paint fur realistically is to start with the texture, so the carved hairs are very important even in a monochromatic piece.

Wow! This one is very eyecatching. The metallic effect is superb and excellent contrast between the metallic and the spots!

Thanks! I thought so too. It was good but when I made the spots black again, it really popped.
