Japanese Fox Mask by merimask Japanese Fox Mask by merimask
This mask was a very inspired commission from another artist here at DeviantArt. It's a sort of combination of my Okami wolf mask and my red fox mask.

I thought it might look like two diferent designs smashed together but it actually flows very nicely. The sumi-e elements on the cheeks and inside the ears make this look like a fantasy kitsune. I suspect I'll be doing a lot more of these.

This masks is (like everything I do) made from one piece of hand carved, hand sculpted leather. I actually documented the process in :iconleathermaskart: , if you're interested in seeing the progression.

These will eventually be available in my Etsy shop for purchase. [link]

I'm going to have a go at making a leather mask but quite small, about a 5cm x 5cm size, do you have any advise for doing smaller masks? X

I would love to see more animals done in this style with the sumi-e detailing. It's a nice touch that gives it a very dreamlike quality. Suddenly the fox is not just an animal, it's a spirit.

Well, there's my Shiranui and Amaterasu wolves, but I think a cat might be fun to try as well. Possibly a white tiger. :-)

That's exactly what they are based on...sumi-e ink art is very representational of elements in nature and those swirls depict clouds. There are specific designs in sumi-e to represent fire, water, and air...this one is air. :-) Good eye!

I like the blended motifs here. They flow into each other very nicely. This is surely going to be a memorable selection for the person who choose it!

I think it works very well as a fantasy kitsune. Not done like a traditional kitsune mask, but the design elements are based on traditional art so it still looks "Japanese". I'm awful pleased with this one. ;-)

The swirls really do work very well - it looks all cloudy and floaty and nice. :D The colours work very well, too - the red fox colour-combo is pretty perfect.
