Kayak Koi by merimask Kayak Koi by merimask
This has ~nothing~ to do with masks, but I just had to share this picture. I painted this koi on my kayak yesterday in about an hour, because I thought it might be fun to have a koi on my kayak. :-)

It's my favorite kind of koi; the lucky three-colored kind. I think they're called Showa? Tansho Showa? Something like that. I used to know. I made the tail all long and fantastic like one of those dragon koi or butterfly koi or whatever the type...because it's my boat and because I can. I sketched it on there (in white paint) in about 5 minutes.

The kayak is a 12 foot Wilderness Pamlico. I love it because it's small enough to be maneuverable, but it is pretty fast and tracks straight. Very stable in the waves.

I used my favorite Liquitex paints, and when it was very dry I sealed it with a waterproof acrylic spray. I know this should last a good long time because I paint all kinds of things around the house this way (garden rocks, my mailbox, the garbage can!).

I might end up adding some Japanese-looking waves to this. Or maybe a second koi. Not sure! One thing's for sure; my kayak is going to be utterly unique! ;-)

At the pet store we used to call them Butterfly Koi, and I always wanted one, but as I live in an apartment, a pond is out of the question. They're soooooo pretty, and I love the one you painted on there! I think you should add a second koi and the waves :D

What a fantastic addition to your kayak! Very fitting for a boat, and the koi looks stunning against the blue background.

Yeah, except for when some have the habit of tearing out all your pond's vegetation... :]

I love them anyway!

This is such a great idea. And it turned out really well. I love the shading, and the colour spots are perfectly distributed.

Now I want a painted Koi fish. And a yatch. And a nearby lake. ... ;)

Your understanding of form and function, shadow and light astounds me. The beauty in the simplicity of this is stunning.

I love koi, lol!

Very cute koi, and some Japanese-styled waves would certainly set the little fellow of nicely!

Heeehee! I think that's a great idea! I have a 9ft Emotion Glide (in tangerine) that I adore. Like your Palmico (which I contemplated buying) the Glide is very maneuverable and surprisingly stable on waves stirred up by the mountain wind. Of course mine is just a lake/river kayak but yay! I've been contemplating something to paint on mine but I just couldn't decide... now I know. I'm going to paint an Elasmosaur, an Ichthyosaur or a Mosasaur. Cause dinosaurs rock. Thank you for the list of materials. The waterproof sealer I'll have to look for but yay! Weekend-project!

Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey cool! How is the Glide? I have the Emotion Vertex as a backup loaner for friends who are beginners. It has great stability but tracks like crap. It sort of wiggle waggles like a duck when I paddle. But hey, it's fine for having fun & that's the point. :-)

If you look to upgrade, check your local CraigsList first. I was shocked to see how many nice 'yaks are available there. Lots of people get a kayak & then change their minds 'cause they think it's too much work. You can pick up a great boat so cheaply there.

Totally link me to your finished painting when you do it! ^_^ Oh, I used a spray acrylic sealer (kelly's "instant shine" which you can possibly find on line, but any waterproof acrylic sealer will do).

Kayaking! I kind of want to do this with my parents' kayaks, just replace a koi with whatever I think suits them best. :D Beautifully done, I love the face.

You're going to be sailing by and people are going to be pointing at the fish and saying "Hey, look, they've got koi in this river!" Cats and bears will be jumping in to catch it, birds of prey smacking themselves into your kayak... it's going to be a mess. Just wanted you to be prepared for the inevitable.
