Leather Coyote Mask 2010 by merimask Leather Coyote Mask 2010 by merimask
I'm having fun with my new textured backdrop fabrics and so I decided to make a new Coyote mask, just so I could photograph him well. The old picture was terrible.

Here it is: my Coyote design. I always quite liked this one. In answer to a question someone here on DA put to me; I think the Coyote is my favorite mask (that I make). It's just the right combination of stylized & realistic, in my opinion.

As ever, this is hand-carved 8 oz veg-tanned tooling leather (all those little hairs are cut by hand...not painted on!). Wet-formed with no mold, heat-set, and painted with Liquitex acrylics.

This guy is available in my Etsy shop: [link]

the fur detail is STUNNING as always. My fav part though I think it the pink in the ears... from here it looks as though you shaded it when you painted it... Did you? Great mask , But you already know that.

Thanks! :-) Yep, I did a layer of pink with a good bit of brown in it, then pink shaded to the center, then I mix white right into the pink while it's still tacky, in the very middle part, like blending oil paints. S'fun!

The hairs that you carve always blow me away, it almost makes it seem like the masks are carved out of wood.

Technique question: when you carve leather do you need to apply downwards force so that the tool doesn't slip? I've only ever really had experience with carving linocut and due to my inexpertise I had a bunch of places where the tool slipped and made a line that I didn't want :(

Yes exactly. Carving leather is a lot like carving wood, only you don't cut away parts of the leather; you compress it because it's soft when dampened.

You always have to keep downward vertical pressure & always draw the blade towards you, for control. I bear down quite a but, to get a dramatic deep cut, which is why I have to use 8oz leather. It suits my carving style.

I see! so it's not so much carving like other materials, though the technique is the same, more like making... extended indentations?

I really want to try it for myself! I'll have to wait a couple of months though...

Right! You do use a blade, so it's a cut, just not a "removal", you see?

It looks so nice! Almost like it has a real fur! The ears are great too. And the mix of the dark-brown and light-brown in de middle looks so awesome! And your new background looks quite nice too!
Btw, isn't it a pain to do all those hairs? Looks like it costed a lot of time.
Anyway, really nice!

That's unfortunate. But, orders for everything :). I hope your custormers will be as glad and happy and exited and... and.. (you know what I mean) like I was when I got the mask. No wait, not was, but are ;). Still hold it in front of my face every day, and show it to all my friends :) I'm pretty proud of it. But enough about me xD. What kind of orders do you get mostly at the moment?

greetings
