New Traditional Horus Mask #2 by merimask New Traditional Horus Mask #2 by merimask
I was commissioned to make a Horus and I ~really~ don't like my old design. So I came up with an entirely new one. This is the second version of that new design. I wanted this one to look more like a gilded Death Mask so I made the face all bright metallic gold.

Horus is one of the oldest and most significant deities in ancient Egyptian religion. He was most often depicted as a falcon, or as a man with a falcon head. Horus served many functions in the Egyptian pantheon, most notably being the god of the sun, war and protection.

My Horus is carved from one piece of thick, 8oz vegetable-tanned tooling leather, shaped by hand, and painted with a variety of colorfast acrylic paints that won't fade or crackle; black, burnished gold, bright gold, copper and bronze.

I'm liking the gold over the white, myself. I think the white is just a little too glaring and the gold works well with the sun theme, anyway.

I agree. :) The white looks more falcon-like, but the gold looks more like an Egyptian mask motif anyway so...

I can see the Egyptian influences, but my first thought on seeing this is still Tlinget. Not sure why.

Yeah, I think my strongest influence was this image here: [link]

It reminds me strongly of a Raven totem that was not far from our house when I was a small child. I think my mother still has the picture. I know it has the hooked beak of Hawk, but the color and patterning say Raven to me. It's quite beautiful.
