Original Sun And Moon Mask by merimask Original Sun And Moon Mask by merimask
My recent brush with copyright infringement (ahem) was a good catalyst, and I'm revisiting some older designs. Here's my logo from 1999... [link] . You might notice the sun and moon mask back there? Well, I haven't really made one of those in years...probably five or six to be exact. Certainly not since I've had a digital camera. So I decided to make it again and photograph it well this time.

And there it is! It really is a fun design, even if it's old. Perfect for people who can't decide if they are a morning person or an evening person. Or perhaps just someone who likes gold AND silver.

Like always, this mask is made from one piece of top-grade 8 oz leather, hand carved & shaped without molds or forms (each is a one-of-a-kind sculpture) and hardened with heat. Painted with colorfast Liquitex acrylics.

This new (old!) Sun And Moon is available right now in my Etsy shop: [link]

The sun looks so playful and the moon looks so serious to me! A great dichotomy :) Looks like something that would show up at a masked ball!

It's great! The shape is great, and I love the fact that you did an old mask again. It turned out so cool! You can almost see the sun smile :) I love the shape of those long things on the side of the sun (Don't know how to say that in English xD). It must have been hard to shape the moonside, but it worked out pretty nice! Again, it's one of your masterpieces :D (Like all of yours, because they're all so amazing ;))

The best thing about revisiting old art is that you have grown as an artist in the time between, which makes it fun to take an old design and see how much you can spruce it up and make it better. I've been doing a lot of the sun/moon style motifs lately, because I love the old sun/moon idea, along with the comedy/tradegy themes, so the idea of happy sun sad moon or vice versa has been coming out a lot in my art.

I love the idea of some of your masks, but I sometimes wonder if it doesn't grate on you making the same things over and over again? I realize that you do it as a job, and so some consistency is needed, but at the same time, do you ever take old patterns and vary them into new forms? You call them one-of-a-kind, but I feel more as if your work comes out as a series and should be numbered 1 of _____ instead.

Anyway, I don't want to sound harsh, as I do really enjoy your work, but I'm just curious as to how you feel about the idea of metamorphosing old art into new ideas.

Cheers.

I do that a lot actually...revisit older themes. I've re-designed my popular masks (the wolves and foxes) three or four times & I'm completely redoing a tiger right now.

It can indeed get dull to make a design over & over. I do little things, like I carve fur patterns fresh each time with no template, or I do those little half-dragons that are sketched on fresh each time, or I switch up a painting technique. But if I couldn't make popular designs over & over, I'd be out of business pretty fast. Part of being a professional artist is knowing what people want, & what people want is often universal, so yeah...repetition happens.

So when it gets to me, I just take pride in the craftsmanship & make EVERY mask as perfect as I can. It serves to satisfy in the same way that creating something fresh will. Usually, it's enough.

btw, I only ever number the first three of any given new design. After the third, I've "set" the design & I know they'll all be pretty similar after that, so I don't number after the third.

Good questions. :-)

Ooooh! I hope you're going to post pictures once you get your tiger mask all sorted.

And I know exactly what you mean about the same designs over and over again, that's why I left my last job, the repetition in the art was so boring after a while that it was making me hate drawing. With leather and metal work it's different. I get such a better feeling of satisfaction when I have something tangible to hold after I am finished. Of course, that's probably why I'm such a hoarder and have a hard time letting any of my pieces go.

Tiger is coming soon. Monday most likely. ;-)

Once you get consistent with your work, it's not so hard to let it go. The only piece I've never sold is Natsu No Nami (my wave dragon plaque) and that's 'cause I know I can't make it again. Everything else I'm certain I can re-do so it's ok to let it go. :-)

I actually really like this, it's a lovely design. However, I don't care for the line coming off of the moon's nose, and does that bottom curl on the sun poke the chin? That leads me to another question, do you try these on to see if they'll fit the face? Do you use a face cast? It says no molds but, how do you make sure it's actually wearable?

I gave the moon "age" lines, to make him more serious. The sun is lighter & happier (I guess I like sunshine!).

The whole thing is totally wearable because I mold them to my own face. I shape them extra-generous so they'll fit on anyone's face, but every design definitely has to "work" or I won't mold it that way.
