RIP Korky

I love dogs, always have. They are little heartbreakers, though. I'm sad tonight because my friend has lost her corgi buddy, Korky, to age and illness. He was a cute little fellow. I even made a mask of him once, as a gift to her.

He was adorable.

We give our hearts to them, so they can break them, but what can we do? They become family to us, even though their little lives are too brief. We mark the eras of our lives with their presence. Casey was the dog of my youth. Tucker and Ruby saw me through my first marriage and my rebuilding. Kiba will be the dog of my daughter's childhood.

Korky was the dog of my friend's twenties. He passed on the very eve of motherhood for her. How profoundly sad that she has to say goodbye to her furry friend on the day before she welcomes her new baby. She'll begin a new era, now.

I've lost some dogs over the years. Ruby, Tucker, Casey...time does heal the pain, but my heart breaks whenever a beloved old dog passes. Is it wrong to be crying for an old dog I never actually met in person? I feel like I knew him, anyway. Korky deserves a tear or two...he was a Good Dog. He'll be missed.

So long, space cowboy.
