here is the second Asian Flame Dragon Mask I did over the weekend.
This one has the more traditional bright red and gold flames on black. Actually a REALLY traditional color scheme would be those bright red/gold flames on deep blue. I saw guardian deities painted like that everywhere. Might just try that as well! Why not?
Trick of the trade; everyone who does leatherwork marvels at the way I get bright colors on black; it's sort of my trademark. Know how I do it? Most people dye the whole piece black & then lay several layers of paint over the black. It never works; the dye bleeds through and you get dull, streaky-looking color that's never quite right. Watercolors taught me; always work from light to dark and let your paper be the brightness. So! I let the bare leather stay bare and paint my bright colors over it. Then I add the black or other dark color by hand, with a brush, carefully, all around it. It takes extra time but it's the only sure way to get brilliant color on black.
And now you know one of my secrets! ^_^
This mask (and others!) is available at my online Etsy shop: [link]

Try Tandy Leather Company, they have supplies & kits for starters. Also try looking up "Venetian Mask making"...there are how-to books with instructions.
Or just do what I did & buy tooling leather & experiment on your own.
Thank you...heh, no I really am not much of a mask-wearer actually. I make them like crazy & they are displayed all over the house, but I never really have the chance/need to wear them.

Do you ever wear your masks? You certainly have enough of them
