Small Dragon Mask by merimask Small Dragon Mask by merimask
Now, I often make these small half-masks & sell them at my Etsy site. They are affordable and comfortable to wear...I've sold dozens of them.

I got the idea to do one as an Asian dragon, though, and I have to say I find it utterly adorable. It's so colorful and fun! I'll definitely be doing more of these.

I never save the pattern, though, because I like the challenge of drawing something directly on the leather every time (it keeps things fresh for me), so this little guy is one-of-a-kind.

I did him in blue and copper and gold over black...next time I want to make a green and purple and gold one. At the Chinese Lantern Festival in Toronto, I'm always struck by the brightly contrasting colors of Chinese dragons, so I guess I'm trying to capture that effect.

As always, you can purchase my work at my Etsy shop: [link]

He is great. It is cool to see both your large and smaller works. Oh, by the way, the key chain dragon and hair piece I bought my daughter for Christmas are holding up great and she really loves them!

Wow, this is really amazing. The dragon is adorable, he looks so shy and unsure of what is going on, but its a great look. Kudos to you on making a new pattern every time.

Thank you! I really enjoy drawing these out fresh every time...I actually think it's a lot more fun than just following the same pattern. It makes each mask special too!

I would think that doing the same pattern every time would get boring. You can only do so much with a design. But you do not, and I LOVE your masks. So it works out well. ^_^

Goooorgeous! I love your masks- they are so detailed!

I'd love to make one of my own, but I have no idea how you manage to make the face-shape during the molding process without a face to strap it to until it dries O_o

I have some acrylics, but they aren't liquitex. Do you think they will work to paint on leather as well...?

Tandy Leather Company (TLC online) sells plastic face molds...also many maskmakers use wig "heads" as face forms (you can find them in every beauty supply shop).

Any acrylic that can be used on fabric is good to use on leather. It has to be flexible when dry, do it won't crack if the mask bends.

Good luck & have fun. :-)

Thanks! Yeah I have to draw the half-masks by hand. They are small & cheap & so I sell a LOT of them...if they were all identical they'd be SO boring to make, you know?

Ah, how cute! The dragon's face looks so peaceful and... youthful? Young...? Hurr. It doesn't have that typical intimidating look.

The scales seem at odds to me for some reason, to be entirely honest. Like they're too sharp or too dark... maybe a lightening the lines would make it look less sharp.

But that's a matter of opinion and personal preference. c: Disregarding my own bias, it's very beautiful, as always.

Thank you. :-)

Actually...it's always hard to tell in a flat picture but the scales aren't drawn on; they are carved right into the leather. Then, I dry-brushed color over them after painting the entire mask black, which is probably why the contrast seems so stark.

No, I can tell that they're carved in, it's just the lines look really dark.

I can only dictate from the picture, though, hahah.
