The Dream by merimask The Dream by merimask
This was a very special leather mask, commissioned by my brother as a gift for Franco Dragone. I called it "The Dream" because it was given to him on the occasion of the opening of his show "Le Reve" at the Wynn in Las Vegas.

Le Reve is a pretty awesome, eclectic show so I wanted this to be a pretty awesome eclectic mask. The elements of earth (amber, turquoise, & Botswana agate) are represented, as well as air (gold angel's wing) and water (art deco waterfall, fish fin). All these elements appear in the show, as well as the flowing Art Nouveau red scarf which also appears in the show & ties everything together.

He was apparently very pleased with the mask so, mission accomplished. ^_^

I love this mask, the red scarf looks wicked sweet.
You have disabled comments on your new entries, which makes me sad, because every time I see a new mask, I want to tell you how lovely your work is getting.

I think my favorite mask. It is so unusual, with the myriad elements yet somehow balanced, and and that art nove...wait...you said that!? Okay! :D So it is Art Noveau, red scarf. It just has such a unique design.

I know next to nothing about mask making--so I could very well be wrong--but this mask looks a lot simpler than some of your more recent masks. Or, at least less time consuming, since there aren't a hundred little scales/feathers. But then, you probably made that time up in R&D, so it balances out.

It's a beautiful piece.

True...this was a very "clean" design with bold lunes & less texture. I wanted it to be more iconic & less representational.

Thank you. :-)

A strange design, but quite suitable from the sounds of it. Very nice use of symbolism!

It was a departure for me...I don't usually do "concept" pieces. But, it's good to stretch your wings once in a while. :-)

OMG He's your brother!?! That's awesome!
I haven't seen any of the Cirque du Soleil shows but I saw Celine Dion's show, which he made, right? xD

What an amazing pair of siblings! :D

I love how unique and different the mask is compared to your other ones!

Actually no, my brother IS an artist (John Masse...his DA site is here:[link]), he's an amazing artist in his own right but he was working with Franco & that was the connection. :-)

Thank you. ^_^

It was a departure at the time. My first non-representational "concept" mask ever.

wow thats a complex mask. just the sheer method of switching stlyes must have been difficult. I especialy like how you did the cloth with engraving lines to bring out its dimension.

Thank you. It was a stretch at the time but it led to more experiments, & I'd have never nade a mask like "Tsuru" if I hadn't tried this first.

That is one crazy mask. Definitely eclectic for sure. At first I thought it was some sort of abstract painting haha. Great stuff!

Thank you!

Abstract is what I was going for. :-) It's a jumble of images and elements...a lot like Franco's show "Le Reve" actually.
