Artist's Comments

"Tsuru" means "crane" in Japanese.

This mask was made as a very special gift. I was thinking about healing when I made it. It is very much inspired by Ukiyo-e art...popular woodcut prints of the 16th through 19th century, commonly seen in Japan. That's why I chose to do tea-stained clouds.

Like all my masks, this mask is carved out of 8oz leather, three times the thickness of most Venetian-style leather masks. This allows me to carve the leather deeply, but requires me to shape the entire sculpture by hand with no use of molds or armatures.

I painted it with a variety of acrylic stains that are both waterproof and colorfast. I like to mix my own colors. I also do not use an airbrush...that's all done by hand.

Many of these pieces are available for sale on my Etsy site; [link]

This is the mask I made for Higuchi-san as a gift. It kind of opened a LOT of doors for me. ^_^

Haha, when I saw this piece, it reminded me of wood carvings and then I read the artist's comments and it turns out to be actually based on them ^^ =P Only another proof of your talent I would say :) Btw, the design is amazing! And so original as well, I'm very impressed

Thank you! Yeah, I'm a big fan of ukiyo-e woodcut prints...I thought it might be interesting to do something derivative of that style.

Superb! I love masks in general and this one seems an excellent combination of Venetian and Japanese elements.
The colours and composition are perfect, I admire all the details and the way they were put together.
Definitely one of the most special masks I've ever seen... Harmonious and unique! :+fav:
