Venetian Raven Mask by merimask Venetian Raven Mask by merimask
This is my version of a Venetian mask, in the form of a raven.

Unlike a true Venetian mask (which is made of lightweight leather that is embellished with plaster & gold leaf & is VERY delicate), this mask is made with my own unique technique involving heavy-weight leather that is deeply hand carved. This achieves the ~look~ of a Venetian mask but is durable enough to wear anywhere, indoors or out. Even safe to travel with (the perfect mask to tuck in your suitcase on your next trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras!)

I draw all those little scrolls by hand, free-form, each time I make this mask. It's a lot of fun, frankly. ^_^

You can order this mask (and countless others) at my Etsy shop: [link]

Beautiful. It's nice to have something sturdy enough to actually *use* (I have two masks I need to try to fix. *sigh*) And those curly bits do look like fun.

I like my things to be durable enough to actually use...sort of utilitarian art I guess. :-)

Utilitarian sounds a bit harsh for masks, practical art maybe?

Fantastic! I only wish I could get my glasses out of the way to wear one of these!

Thanks!

Glasses are a problem...everyone's frames are different so there's no way to compensate for them. It's contacts or blurry vision, if you want to wear a mask.
