Custom Purple Unicorn Mask by merimask Custom Purple Unicorn Mask by merimask
I completed this custom unicorn just this morning. Usually, I don't work with colors like these, but I have to say that purple with the metallic teal is a striking combination that I quite like! It's girly, but also kind of Mardi Gras. The purple Swarovski crystals I embellished it with only add to the fun. :-)

As ever, this is 8oz leather, hand-tooled and hand-shaped, painted with Liquitex acrylics. Truly though, I consider this more of a mixed media mask, rather than leather, because of the feather boa and the pearls and crystals...

Custom unicorn masks of ANY color can be ordered at my online shop: [link]

Loving the way you cropped this photo- makes the boa look particularly fluffy and soft. The mask's colours really do complement each other nicely c:

Oh, I love the ears on this one, they seem so gently folded. I like the overall appeal of the mask but I'm still not too fond of those swirls. :B

Your skills.. ad your incredible capacity to translate a symbol into a contemporary, or abstract piece of art.. I am floored. This one leaves a tremendous impact as it's skill level, and the additive decor [which relates well to the content] are simply managed with a mastery of understanding. I am just floored by this one. I'm going to show my unicorn-obsessed sister for sure.

Well thank you! :-) The unicorns are fun because of the variety you can achieve with just the different colors. The black & gold ones look masculine to me, & this one couldn't be more girly, but the only difference is the color.

You know, I never though it did come of effeminate- maybe because all unicorns fall under the category of "girly", even the males come off androgynous. This one actually felt masculine to me... the black and gold felt more aggressive. Either way, it's just charming to look at, and exquisite to scrutinize. I don't see one flaw!

Thank you. :-) I stippled the most delicate sunrise pink inside the ears and I think it turned out cool. Details!

Unusual colors, but I like it! :-) Quite girly/dreamy :D. Did you paint the grooves darker or use a different tool? They look deeper than usual. Of cause, I'm using a different monitor, so maybe that's why ^^

Thank you. :-) Yes! New trick! Usually I use antique stains to accent the carving in my masks, but with smooth masks like this (big areas of not-fur/not-scales that need to be clean looking), the stain doesn't wash away cleanly and it marrs the paint, so I don't usually use it. But! I discovered that I can use a paintbrush to target the stain to the carving, wipe the extra away, and still get the antiqued effect without the mess!

The new trick is great, to me, it looks less carved and more grown now, if that makes sense. ^^ Always love to see you trying something new :-)

Thanks. :-) Me too...usually I use darker richer colors, but the lighter metallic versions make this one seem more delicate. A nice surprise!

Thank you! :-) Yes, I agree, the black background really makes the bright colors & white feathers pop.
